Tungsten-Iron-Carbon (W-Fe-C) Phase Diagram

A vertical section (isopleth) of the tungsten-iron-carbon (W-Fe-C) phase diagram (see Figure 1) is often used to show what happens if cobalt in the tungsten-cobalt-carbon (W-Co-C) ternary system (the basis for cobalt-bonded WC tools) is completely substituted by iron.

Iron moves the favorable FCC + WC region towards higher carbon contents, slightly decreases its width, and lowers the solid-liquid temperatures.

A stoichiometric mixture of WC + 10 wt. % Fe corresponds to approximately 5.52 wt. C; the value which is on the border between the desirable FCC + WC field and the undesirable FCC + M6C + WC field.
